This is a pile of medium sized rocks. Our land is forest land. For thousands of years the trees would drop their leaves. The leaves would compost down (a little) and over time turned into sludgy mud. When the land is wet it is a slushy mess. Our road, cut along a logging trail, they loggers would drag the wood out of the woods along this path to the road. Basically, it is a dry creek bed...most of the time. However, when it rain, it floods. The soil and moisture cause terrific headaches for heavier equipment, the kind we use to pour concrete and deliver steel. The kind of equipment this road will need to support in the next week or so. There is a portion of our road that stays wet longer than the rest of the land. We may have a spring near there. The best way to fix it is to fill the area with medium sized rocks, thus this pile. It is a temporary fix to a long term problem.
Here is the portion of wet road with a thick, and expensive layer of medium rock. The rock was doing its job until the rains came. This portion still looks good and is passable, something that was not really possible before we put the rock down. The rest of the road turned into a fast running steam.
